With school going back and the sun still high in the sky we have implemented a new bedtime routine. After the normal brushing of the teeth, we have always read to the kids. This will not change as I feel that it is important for the kids to be read to.
However, now after we read to them they are now allowed to read to themselves. We have set up lamps in the room and allow them to choose their own story that they would like to read.
Do you like Baden's pile beside his bed. The one who is still up to reading the pictures and making up his own story is the one with more books.
It seems to be working and they are excited to go to bed even with the sun still up.

I don't why I didn't nut that trick out earlier than I did - but it is a bit of parenting GOLD. (win win!)
ReplyDeleteThat is such a lovely idea... and possibly a routine that will take with them for the rest of their lives.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I can remember getting my older two to bed on a winter's evening with the promise of lots of reading time. Worked great on the nights their father wasn't home and I was a bit frazzled. All went well, till one of them realised that yes, they were getting an extra 30 minutes reading in, but actually they were being put to bed 30 minutes earlier. Busted!
ReplyDeleteThen there was the night I turned out light after their reading time. Heard a noise and found the eldest, then five, a very bright boy indeed was reading in bed. By the light of a big candle under the doona! As I said, very bright, but not very practical.
My mum had a rule when we were a little older - we could leave our light on for 30 minutes longer if we were reading - otherwise it went off when we got into bed.
ReplyDeleteSure it was a ply to get us to read more - but it worked!!
